Who doesn’t like CAKE? The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo [CAKE] spends a weekend celebrating independent comics, where Chicago-based artist Andrew Holmquist exhibited in June 2015. Prior to this event, Holmquist’s comic-book style art participated in Ground Floor, an ensemble of Chicago’s most promising emerging talent–only twenty recent graduates from Chicago’s nationally top-ranked Master of Fine Art programs are selected.
Through bright colors and indicative forms, Andrew Holmquist works mostly with oil paint.
“I like that it stays wet enough to scrape away days later,” the artist told ArchiExpo e-Magazine.
He also integrates acrylic and spray paint to give his work different textures, and at university, he worked with other mediums such as printmaking, sculpture and video. The drawing, the artist says, is its own thing.
“I love the drag of a pencil and the fact that I can rest my palm on its surface.”
X-Men comics by Jack Kirby influenced Holmquist’s initial artistic venture, along with inspirations from Alice Neel and Edgar Degas.
