State-of-the-art design and landscaping meet health and community at Oxygen Park in Doha. The Qatar Foundation commissioned the 130,000-square-meter park dedicated to sport and outdoor recreation. Located in Education City, it provides students, faculty and the general public with parkland, subterranean team sport playing fields, equestrian facilities, playgrounds and more.
If outdoor activity in the desert sounds scorching, a breeze flows through Oxygen Park via carved wind passages. Along the paths are refreshing water features and cooled tunnels. The park design is inspired by the wind-eroded rocks and land formations of its desert setting. ‘Balloon lights’ float above the grounds for pleasant, soft lighting at night.
The park, designed by AECOM under the direction of London-based designer Erik Behrens, was shortlisted for a landscape award at the World Architecture Festival in November 2017.
