Although some countries have extended the celebration, the International Year of Light 2015 has come to a close. Here’s a special highlight on innovative lighting products. The Lighting Architecture Movement Project (LAMP) held its second annual competition and announced three first prize winners.

Established Designer

“The only Canadian to have ever received the New York Prize Fellowship from the Van Alen Institute.” Alex Josephson’s light Gweilo, hand-sculpted while still in its hot plastic state, took first.

Emerging Designer

The Eclipse by Annie Tung earned first for “its lunar-like luster and infrequent use.” Hand-carved crystalline marble from Ticino, Switzerland, blends with copper and brass into a sort of “copper cup with one wire cable running down the brass tube.”

Student Designer

Diverge, a cast concrete shell that is meant to represent the base-rock of Earth received first with its two embedded motion sensors within the concrete exterior. The designers, Christina Wilkinson and Danna Lei, made this lamp with a magnetic removable component to allow access to the LED lights, motion sensors and batteries located within the “rock.”
