The German Design Awards listed Luisa Rubisch and Rasa Weber as newcomer finalists for 2019. Through their project Urban Terrazzo, they developed a new construction material from the existing remains of building materials and construction debris. This new material supports the idea of a closed material cycle and is in line with the designers’ desire to “enable so-called waste materials in order to lead new lives.” In an interview with the German Design Awards editorial staff, the designers explain:
“In Berlin alone, around 5 million tonnes of building waste are produced each year. With Urban Terrazzo we transfer these remnants of old architecture into a sustainable material cycle. This not only creates a material that is suitable for recycling, but also closes the life cycle of a building.”
Luisa Rubisch (*1990) & Rasa Weber (*1989) are the founders of the young design and architecture collective TFOB-THEY FEED OFF BUILDINGS, based in Berlin.
