Norwegian light manufacturer Northern Lighting is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the iconic lamp, Dokka. To celebrate its six decades of existence and to commemorate its Norwegian designer Birger Dahl, Northern Lighting is releasing the anniversary lamp in six new colors (one for each decade of its life): aqua green, petrol blue, light grey, dark grey and a new finish of the original white and black. They will be showcasing the new colors with an installation of 16 Dokka lamps at their stand in the biennial exhibition devoted to excellence in the world of lighting, Euroluce E01-Hall 13 in Milan’s Salone del Mobile 2015.
Northern Lighting first introduced the six-anniversary colors at a yearly fall event in September 2014 to a restricted and selective crowd, then publically at the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair in February 2015. A true piece of European history, the Dokka lamp was awarded the admired golden medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954. It was then produced and sold by Sønnico, a Norwegian electricity company that manufactured lamps at the time, and became the best selling lamp ever produced. In the late 60s, Sønnico discontinued lamp production and focused solely on electricity, becoming a significant electrotechnical enterprise in Norway. Thus little Dokka recoiled into its simple drawing form, no longer produced until 2007 when Northern Lighting re-launched the iconic steel lamp.
Northern Lighting, established only a decade ago, has an old soul and an appreciation for classical design. Ove Rogne, CEO of Northern Lighting, refers to Dahl as one of the most prominent Norwegian post-war industrial designers. Since Northern Lighting holds such admiration for Dahl and his products, notably the Dokka and Birdy lamps, they contacted the Dahl family back in 2006 to launch these iconic items in 2007 and 2013, maintaining all original features and shapes. Today’s Dakka lamp holds true to the designer’s philosophy, based on simplicity and cooperation with nature. His designs were functional and took the form of cones, circles and cylinders.
This light manufacturer focuses quite impressively on designers. They offer 2D and 3D downloads of their products which make the design process easier for interior designers and architects. A click of the mouse and designers can download the drawings and renderings of Northern Lighting’s products, then implement them into their digital layout.
Northern Lighting has been captivated with creating and changing effects of light since their doors opened in 2005. Their designs can be found in over 40 different countries’ showrooms and retail outlets, and their handpicked designers are comprised of new promising talent and well-known designers. Northern Lighting is “young, fun and playful,” and values the influence of the natural Nordic light on their designs. Their Euroluce stand will also display their new “Say My Name” series from design duo Morten & Jones and their new collection, “Unplugged”, which includes a candle and tea light candle holder.
