The two friends took a leap of faith and entered a business-plan competition, clinching first prize that provided them with much-needed office space and a small fund of €1,500. Their journey was marked by an unyielding spirit and an ability to turn challenges into celebrations. With their meager funds, they threw a company party and invested in a sunbed, which became the cornerstone of their first prototype.
In 2003, Sunshower BV was officially established, accompanied by the prestigious KEMA-KEUR certification. This marked a pivotal moment as Sunshower was embraced by CenterParcs for installation in their tropical swimming pools—a testament to the product’s innovation and quality. The vision resonated, and Sunshower began making its mark in bathroom stores across the nation.

However, the sunbed industry was soon overshadowed by concerns about excessive sun exposure. Responding to the evolving needs of their customers and backed by research with dermatologists, Merijn and Oscar delved into the positive effects of controlled UV-B light exposure. Collaborating with university hospitals, they conducted research that yielded astonishing results: regular use of Sunshower led to a near doubling of vitamin D levels in the winter, all without harming the skin.
This discovery laid the foundation for a healthy alternative, redefining the concept of well-being and sun exposure. As they expanded their product line to include infrared technology and delved into the realm of medical applications, their sister company Dermasun Medical was established in 2010, offering a ray of hope to those with chronic skin conditions.
