DLA Piper’s new Helsinki office, nestled within Alvar Aalto’s iconic ‘Sugar Cube’ building, showcases meticulous design, preserving the building’s legacy while introducing innovative workspace concepts.

In the heart of Helsinki’s bustling Katajanokka neighborhood, a new chapter in architectural synergy has been penned with the transformation of Alvar Aalto’s iconic “Sugar Cube” building. The latest tenant to grace its hallowed halls is the global law firm, DLA Piper, whose recent move into this historic landmark required a delicate dance between tradition and innovation.

The “Sugar Cube” building, initially constructed in 1962 to house the corporate headquarters of Stora Enso, has long stood as a beacon of Finnish architecture. Its distinctive monolithic design is a testament to Alvar Aalto’s genius, making it a significant cultural and architectural icon in Helsinki. In 2022, DLA Piper selected Fyra as their design partner to reimagine the building’s functionality and appearance while paying homage to its storied history.

Preserving History, Embracing the Future

The challenge was monumental: to strike a harmonious balance between preserving the building’s historical features and integrating modern functionality. Working closely with Fyra, the project’s principal designer, in collaboration with Ark-Byroo, DLA Piper embarked on this journey with guidance from the Finnish Heritage Agency and the Alvar Aalto Foundation. Together, they artfully designed the premises to incorporate new elements that coexist elegantly with Aalto’s original vision, avoiding any confusion between the old and the new.

Innovative Workspaces and Unique Design

DLA Piper’s new office space reflects meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of the evolving workspace needs. Recognizing that a significant portion of the staff was accustomed to individual offices, the design prioritized collaborative spaces. Meeting rooms, phone booths, and quiet zones were thoughtfully integrated to facilitate a smooth transition into open workspaces. Beyond these provisions, the layout incorporated specialized areas such as a dedicated webinar room, a library, and a recreational space.

The interior design pays homage to the building’s distinctive architectural language. For instance, the long solid wood pulls for veneered wardrobes and the brass moldings used in the stone joints of the reception desk draw inspiration from the building’s original design, creating a sense of continuity while introducing contemporary functionality.

A Panoramic Gem

One of the most captivating features of the new DLA Piper headquarters is the expansive semi-public lounge. Offering breathtaking views of Helsinki Market Square and the adjacent sea, this lavish space is designed for both employees and visitors. It serves as a testament to the company’s commitment to providing an inviting and inspiring workspace.

With its completion in December 2022, the project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and creativity. DLA Piper’s new Helsinki office not only pays tribute to Alvar Aalto’s architectural brilliance but also sets a new standard for the fusion of tradition and innovation in workspace design.

Fyra, a Helsinki-based design agency, has once again proven its prowess in creating spaces that seamlessly blend functionality, aesthetics, and branding. Their work on the DLA Piper Helsinki office adds another feather to their cap, solidifying their reputation as a responsible and proactive player in the industry. Notably, they were awarded the Architizer A+Awards 2022 for Best Interior Design Firm and the Dezeen Awards 2021 Interior Design Studio of the Year.
