Launched at IMM, the new mattress system by LAYER for MAZZU rethinks modularity and eco-design.

January 14 to 18, 2024—LAYER introduces the MAZZU mattress at IMM Cologne in Germany this week, offering a fresh take on sleep technology. This foamless, modular mattress system redefines industry standards by prioritizing sustainability and longevity.

Designed to challenge traditional conventions, the Chinese brand MAZZU incorporates a unique modular construction, extending the product lifespan and minimizing waste. With a focus on adaptability and repairability, LAYER‘s innovative approach not only enhances comfort but also addresses environmental concerns, providing a glimpse into the future of responsible mattress design. As the MAZZU mattress debuts at IMM Cologne, it marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and conscious approach to a good night’s sleep.

Technical Highlights of the MAZZU Mattress

The MAZZU mattress stands out for its technical ingenuity, featuring a composition of “modular pocket springs” at its core. These hour-glass springs are encased in a seamless, two-tone, 3D-knit textile, forming an aesthetically pleasing melange sleeve with a recyclable connecting system. The innovation lies in its adaptability, as the modular pocket springs are available in three tensions – Firm, Medium, and Soft – enabling users to tailor the mattress to their preferred sleeping position. This flexibility extends to couples, who can independently configure each side of the mattress to accommodate individual preferences.

The secure “snap-fit” connection between individual spring modules, combined with a Base Matrix and comfortable Cushion Topper, results in a versatile mattress that can be easily assembled, configured, and repaired as needed to fit various frame sizes across different countries. Once assembled, the mattress proudly showcases its open structure, highlighting the distinctive spring system, allowing users to personalize their sleep environment.

Beyond its technical prowess, the MAZZU mattress is a testament to sustainability and user well-being. Crafted from skin-friendly and eco-conscious materials such as organic wool, recycled polyester, natural latex, and recyclable polymer, it prioritizes comfort and support while eliminating the need for glue and foam.

“We’ve been working with MAZZU for the last three years, and have been so impressed with their commitment to driving a groundbreaking, sustainable system for sleep. The bedding industry needs step changes in the way it thinks about delivering high-performance products whilst being mindful of the planet and MAZZU are leading the way in contributing to that dialogue,” Benjamin Hubert, Founder of LAYER, stated in a press release.

Behind Its Compressed Form and Foam-free Comfort

The MAZZU mattress pioneers a foam-free and glue-free construction, addressing the environmental and health concerns associated with traditional mattress materials. Studies from 2018 and 2020 highlight the alarming environmental impact of discarded mattresses worldwide, with over 60 million metric tons annually, and more than 90% of mattress components being non-recyclable. Additionally, the production of polyurethane (PU) foam, a common mattress material, is both energy-intensive and releases harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The MAZZU mattress confronts these issues by adopting a revolutionary design that eliminates PU foam, prioritizing both sustainability and user well-being.

Beyond its eco-friendly approach, the MAZZU mattress introduces practical innovations in packaging and storage. The spring modules, integral to the mattress’s design, can be compressed from a substantial height of 250 mm to a mere 50 mm. This compression not only facilitates efficient shipping but also allows for convenient storage in a compact, reusable packaging system crafted by LAYER. For example, a small double mattress can undergo a remarkable reduction from 0.6m³ to just 0.12m³, marking an impressive 80% decrease in volume.

Moreover, the modular design of the MAZZU mattress goes beyond mere convenience; it enables easy disassembly for storage, cleaning, and the replacement of individual modules. This unique feature not only enhances the lifespan of the mattress but also offers a scalable solution. Users can seamlessly combine new modules with existing ones, allowing the mattress to evolve and grow according to changing needs. In doing so, the MAZZU mattress not only redefines the concept of comfort but also introduces an eco-conscious and adaptable approach to the entire lifecycle of a mattress.
