Those dreamy, imaginative air drawings can now become solid objects with “the world’s first 3-D printing pen,” the 3doodler by Wobbleworks Inc. The original version from 2013 was revamped and sized down by 75%.
Version 2.0 comes with a lighter and sleeker design. The device works a lot like a hot glue gun using ABS or PLA plastic filaments that are extruded from the pen’s heated nozzle tip. While one doodles, the semi-liquid plastic ink is cooled by a built-in fan that solidifies the drawing into a 3-D form.
The pen weighs only 50 grams with an aluminum casing and a patented air system. In order to respond to various creative demands, the pen also has two-speed settings that allow different plastic strand thicknesses.
Daniel Cowen, Peter Dilworth and Maxwell Bogue are the co-creators behind 3doodler and the brains that wanted to create a tool with no strings attached. As envisioned, the pen is free from software, applications and computer add-ons.
