Interview. All about Craft with Utopia and Utility

Utopia and Utility is developing a new range of Stacking Vessels for Spring 2018, using cut-glass for the first time.

The Finnish company is extremely active in mixed media creations including glass, ceramic, wood, processed paper and cork. Utopia and Utility handcrafts its deco, lighting and furniture pieces that range from stacking vessels, to paper jewelry and cork tables.

We work with a wide palette of materials. The challenge is more about combining them. Making a glass vase embrace a ceramic bowl is the real difficulty,” Ranee Lachaize, studio manager, told ArchiExpo e-Magazine. “Our concept is to turn a beautiful design object into something useful and practical. A Stacking Vessel can be the dinner table masterpiece, and then turn into a vase and a fruit bowl.”

The company also recently launched a new range of glass furniture including the Cestini side table, made of hand-blown glass and basket weaving at Paris’ Maison & Objet.

“We’re always experimenting with new materials and techniques.”
