Interview. Front x GAN Rugs: The Parquet Collection

Swedish design studio Front collaborated with GAN Rugs on Parquet, a collection of beautifully designed geometric rugs that evoke Scandinavian colors and shapes with a puzzle-like, three-dimensional pattern. The lively rugs were featured at the 2018 IMM Cologne. We spoke with Front designer Sofia Lagerkvist to learn more about the collaboration and the inspiration behind the uniquely shaped rugs:

“We’ve always admired [GAN’s] amazing innovativeness and process in their previous projects. It has turned out to be an amazing collaboration. We have been working on this project for four years now. It has taken many different turns, but it has developed through different stages.”

Front explained how inspiring it was to work with a company so involved in the process—from the research and learning of weaving techniques to the dying of the yarn to the final small details on the finished pieces.

Parquet is a French word that means wooden flooring, which Front uses for a “designated area or enclosed area.” The inspiration behind the shape comes from the desire to enclose different colors within black lines. The design concept derives from traditional floors, which were highly decorated, in contrast to today’s simple flooring and rugs.

“[The design] makes it a bit modular as well. You can add different rugs and jig-saw them together.”
