SofiaHagen x Studio Marmi’s HEMPLA collection blends 3D printing and traditional craftsmanship into sustainable meditation furniture, launched last June.

In a fusion of digital innovation and traditional craftsmanship, SofiaHagen x Studio Marmi have unveiled HEMPLA, a unique meditation furniture set. This collaboration marries the latest in 3D printing technology with the time-honored principles of Zen garden design, creating a space for mindfulness and relaxation that is as sustainable as it is serene.

HEMPLA is not just furniture; it’s an experience. Drawing inspiration from the contemplative simplicity of Zen gardens, the HEMPLA meditation set invites users to create a sanctuary of peace and harmony. The set includes a 3D-printed seat and a handwoven rug, each crafted with meticulous attention to detail and sustainability.

The seats are a marvel of modern technology and eco-friendly materials. The HEMPLA I seat is 3D printed using a blend of organic hemp and fermented sugarcane, while the HEMPLA II seat, which features integrated LED lighting, is made entirely of BIO-PLA derived from fermented sugarcane. The LEDs, designed by Studio Waldemeyer, are programmed to sync with the user’s circadian rhythm, enhancing the meditative experience with soft, warm light.

The 3D Printing Progress: 50% Less Material

Sustainability is at the heart of the HEMPLA philosophy. The 3D printing process used to create these seats is one of the most energy-efficient fabrication methods available today, using 50% less material than traditional methods and generating zero waste. The materials themselves are biodegradable, non-toxic, and fully recyclable, ensuring that each piece is as kind to the environment as it is to its users.

Complementing the innovative seats is the HEMPLA meditation rug, a handwoven masterpiece from Usak, Turkey. Crafted from undyed recycled hemp fibers and 100% natural wool, each rug is unique, showcasing the natural variations in hemp color. These rugs provide a cushioned, comfortable base for meditation, combining the strength and durability of hemp with the softness of wool.

The Launch Event and a Month of Mindfulness

The HEMPLA collection made its debut at The KINN in Venice Beach, Los Angeles, on June 6, 2024. The launch event featured meditation sessions, sustainability talks, and a panel discussion moderated by art theorist Ignaz Cassar, PhD, MBA. Panelists Sofia Hagen, Moritz Waldemeyer, and Asli Smith delved into topics ranging from advanced technologies to biomaterial research, highlighting how the blend of digital innovation and traditional craftsmanship can foster sensory wellbeing.

Following the launch, HEMPLA was showcased at various venues across Los Angeles, including events in collaboration with the LA Design Festival, Architecture studio Hatch Inc., and Graham Hill’s sustainability platform, The Carbonauts. These events continued to explore the themes of sustainability and advanced technology in design, offering attendees the opportunity to experience the HEMPLA collection firsthand.

The HEMPLA collection will be featured at the Material Matters event in London from September 18-21, 2024. Held at the Bargehouse, OxoTower Wharf, this event will bring together over 40 leading brands, designers, and makers to celebrate the transformative power of materials in contemporary design. Visitors to Material Matters will have the chance to see the HEMPLA furniture set in person and learn more about the innovative processes and sustainable materials behind its creation.

A Meditation Furniture Set

HEMPLA represents a pioneering step in the fusion of technology and craftsmanship, offering a timeless design dedicated to mindfulness. By utilizing sustainable materials and advanced 3D printing techniques, SofiaHagen x Studio Marmi have created a meditation furniture set that not only enhances the practice of mindfulness but also promotes environmental stewardship. As the HEMPLA collection continues its journey from Los Angeles to London, it stands as a testament to the power of innovation and tradition in shaping the future of design.
