Maison&Objet Asia selected André Fu from design studio AFSO for Designer of the Year 2016. The young designer, having established the studio in 2000, has worked with clients such as Maybourne Hotel Group, Capella Hotels, Park Hyatt Hotels, restauranteur Alan Yau, lifestyle retailer Louis Vuitton, Lane Crawford and gallerist Emmanuel Perrotin.
Hospitality is his forte and when Fu met Andreas Stalder, senior vice president of Food & Beverage Operations and Product Development for Hyatt Hotels Asia Pacific, a tale of timeless hospitality design unfolds.
“I believe timeless design is typically driven by a pursuit in creating experiences for the customer,” André Fu told ArchiExpo. “It is not about creating an environment, but a backdrop for things to happen and take place.”
During Maison&Objet Asia 2016, Fu and Stalder delivered a delightful discussion about their upcoming collaboration on the Andaz Singapore.
“It was a full house,” Stalder told ArchiExpo. “With no seats left available, people were standing in the back and on the sides.”
Stalder explained to ArchiExpo that his professional experience with Fu is a head-to-head brainstorming method, pushing one another to come up with something new: “From conceptual to operational stages, we work together on connecting the dots for a seemless approach.”
“Andaz hotels are conceived to be unscripted, designed to create a unique experience,” Fu continued. “For Andaz Singapore, we have taken the context of the project and its neighbourhood as the key source of inspiration. The goal is to re-interpret these qualities in a bold, yet understated way. The journey of experience speaks of relaxed luxury.”
The hotel is set to open in 2017. “It’s a high profile project and is very much on schedule,” Stalder continued. Stay tuned.
