Designer Arturo Erbsman Brings Sunlight into Homes

Arturo Erbsman is a young Belgium-born French designer whose work offers a singular perspective on the moments of convergence that exist between man-made objects and the four elements of nature (earth, water, air and fire). His focus considers the intricacy and indeed the elegance of the discrete facets of each element.

Arturo Erbsman talked to ArchiExpo about the designs he presented at the 18th SaloneSatellite in Milan. This premier springboard for young design talent is a yearly highlight of the Salone del Mobile. Erbsman’s latest works are a mix of clever lighting concepts, small household objects and candle reflectors.

New lighting projects take inspiration from the sun: “Zenith” is a light whose aim is to bring the sun indoors by projecting its luminous rays onto the ceiling while “Helios” is a light that casts a warming vision of sunset onto a wall. “Chroma” allows the individual to create his own color composition. Using several colored screens placed in front of a light source, he produces the appearance of stained glass. “Eclipse” is a lamp inspired by the astronomical occurrence of a solar eclipse.

“Outlines” is a new collection of small household objects having the appearance of various contours, forms and lines, whilst “Kaléido” and “Aura” are two objects used to reflect candlelight. Watch the video where Erbsman explains his collection in detail.

Erbsman finds inspiration in his far-flung travels and the daily observations of commonplace natural phenomena. He graduated from the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris in 2012 and is currently enrolled in the university’s postgraduate research faculty.
