Documentary—Ukrainian Craftsmanship at Risk of Extinction

What do you know about Ukrainian Design and its roots? What types of craftsmanship existed there 900 years ago and are still in use? How does it affect contemporary design in Eastern Europe?

A group of 12 international design experts from UK, USA, France, Denmark, Finland, Spain and other countries visited five unique design centers of Transcarpathian Ukraine. They discovered original workshops of black-smoked ceramics, Hutsul sheep-wool carpets, sustainable woodwork and many others.

Victoriya Yakusha, the founder of and chief designer at FAINA Design, organized the project to inspire design colleagues around the world with one-of-a-kind regional craft techniques at great risk of extinction. The experience stimulated a deep discussion between them on the future of ancient crafts, their modern interpretation and the collaboration of modern design practitioners with artisans.
