May 2015 rewarded the world of ceramics with artist Matthew Chambers’ latest works at the Puls Ceramics Gallery in Brussels, Belgium. Chambers’ latest exhibition portrayed his UpDown Sequence of ceramic swirls forming spherical objects, a row of his unique Tripartite pieces. Contrasting colors and shades of pastels make up the layers of the Tripartite and show each piece of ceramic art as one of a kind.

Chambers has gone a long way since his first solo exhibition in 2005. Starting young and training under master ceramic artist Philip Wood in his early years, he developed the art in making cylindrical forms with clays and polished his techniques during his years at the Bath School of Art.

Creating functional ceramic ware never caught up on Chambers, although he did his stint in production companies and knew how to make functional pieces. Despite this, Chambers opted to continue making ceramic art sculptures. In an interview with ArchiExpo e-Magazine, Chambers shares that he has been inspired by the works of Barbara Hepworth, one of the pioneers for British modern and contemporary art in making sculptures.

The process of designing ceramic forms has always been an evolving and continuous process for Matthew. In our exclusive interview with the artist, Matthew explains his current design process:

“The forms are about layers getting bigger and smaller, a repetition of the process as outcomes change. It is in developing the pattern, on the surface as it draws you in. You look inside and not just at the surface.”

And from ceramic cylinders that Chambers has created for his exhibition in Puls Ceramics Gallery, there is definitely intrigue in the never-ending swirls of each and every piece.

Currently, Chambers is busy in creating his next installation, preparing his works for his third solo exhibition in October 2015. When asked what he would be showing in the next exhibition, Chambers stated:

“I look at space in the piece and symmetry, these are the next forms that I am doing. I hope they fire well and I look forward to how it will turn out. It is a change in the intensity of the pattern. It can be quite an exhausting process in the making. I feel like opening up to space, making the layers from the inside to outside–still layers and circles but the way it is constructed, it is totally different. Usually, I do works from outside to inside, and with the new works, I start with a small piece and build on that and there are more space.”

His third solo exhibition will be on October 2015 at the Cotswolds Gallery in Chipping, Campden, United Kingdom.
